Rapid Restoration: The Berkeley County Demo Manhole Makeover
The Berkeley County Demo Manhole project in Goose Creek, South Carolina, was completed on June 1, 2025. Berkeley County Water and Sanitation, based in Monks Corner, South Carolina, oversaw the project, while RCI from Ravenel, South Carolina, handled the field application. The specified coatings for this project were Epoxytec’s Mortartec Ceramico and CPP Trowel-Liner, both crucial for ensuring the manhole’s rapid return to service.
The project involved rehabilitating a wastewater manhole with a brick substrate. Surface preparation included a 4,000 PSI power wash with jet gun sand injection to ensure optimal adhesion and durability. The trowel application method utilized 10 kits of Mortartec Ceramico and 12 kits of CPP Trowel-Liner applied to the surface. Despite challenges including ensuring rapid return to service, the project was successfully completed. The coatings were specifically selected for their ability to support the manhole’s quick reintroduction into the system, demonstrating the critical need for effective product solutions in wastewater infrastructure.
RCI’s performance on this project was exceptional, with the owner impressed by their ability to meet tight deadlines and overcome project challenges. “RCI did such a great job with this challenging brick manhole. Their efforts impressed the owner and returned the manhole to service quickly,” said Nick Vause of TSE Coatings, representing Tnemec/Epoxytec. “The preparation method employed on the project was unique and highly effective, further highlighting the capabilities of the products used.”
This project exemplifies how Mortartec Ceramico and CPP Trowel-Liner can provide lasting, reliable protection for wastewater infrastructure. The quick turnaround and quality of work displayed throughout the project reflect the strength and reliability of these coatings in demanding environments.
