Achieving Lasting Protection: Epoxytec’s Series 456 Application at South Bend
Completed in May 2025, the Attenuation Tank Lining project in South Bend, Indiana, features Epoxytec’s coating application, which will provide lasting protection for the State of Indiana. Winchester-based contractor Culy Contracting applied Epoxytec’s Series 456 CPP Sprayliner to the concrete, cast-in-place substrate using plural component spray. The team prepared the surface with 5,000 psi heated hydroblasting, working under challenging confined space conditions with process water exposure. Covering approximately 12,450 square feet, the project required an estimated 1,000 gallons of product to deliver complete protection.
One of the main challenges faced during the project was spraying 1,000 gallons of Series 456 in just two days, which required careful planning and coordination. Additionally, the dewatering and surface preparation process took about three days and included a bypass plug failure that caused the tank to partially fill with water on the second day, creating a significant setback. The crew had to contend with an abundance of sand and mud on the tank floor, which was cleared using a Vactor truck and broomed/squeegeed into the suction hose.
Series 456 CPP Sprayliner was selected for this project due to its ability to handle large, flat walls effectively, making it the ideal choice for this type of structure. Known for its ease of application and high build capabilities, Series 456 is one of Culy Contracting’s go-to solutions for direct-to-concrete lining projects. The crew’s dedication was integral to the project’s success, as over 70 hours of effort ensured its completion on time and under budget. Foreman Chase Peavler led the team, ensuring the project was successfully executed despite the obstacles. This project was particularly unique as it was the first time Culy Contracting had coated a structure of this size with CPP Sprayliner, making it an exciting challenge for the team. They thoroughly enjoyed applying the material and were proud of the successful outcome.
